The Scaled Agile Framework kicked off 2020 with the official launch of SAFe 5.0.

The latest version of the framework centres around 7 core competencies, and has been designed to expand SAFe to encompass the entire enterprise – ultimately empowering organisations to achieve true business agility at scale.

All future SAFe courses will now be delivered in version 5.0, which is great news for all of those delegates looking to undertake some SAFe training in the near future. But one of the more common questions to come out of the launch, is – if and how does this affect those who already hold a SAFe 4.0, 4.5 or 4.6 certification?

We’ve therefore put together this handy little article to provide some advice and guidance on that very topic.

Can I upgrade my existing SAFe 4.0, 4.5 or 4.6 certification to SAFe 5.0?

Yes, absolutely. Any individual with a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) 4 certification can upgrade to SAFe 5.0, at no cost. To do so, you’ll simply need to log in to the SAFe Community Platform and access the SAFe 5.0 Upgrade Learning Plan.

This can be found by clicking on the ‘Update: The SAFe 5.0 Upgrade is now available!‘ banner, displayed at the top of the community page. This will re-direct you to the Upgrade Learning Plan, where you’ll find a number of self-directed learning activities to complete, before moving on to the upgrade exam.

What can I expect from the Learning Plan and Upgrade Exam?

The SAFe 5.0 Upgrade Learning Plan is an online learning experience. It contains a wealth of information, and resources, that will enable you to understand what SAFe 5.0 is all about. All of the content has been specifically created to prepare you for taking and passing the certification upgrade exam – so you’ll certainly be well prepared.

After completing the required learning activities and actions, you will then have two free attempts to take and pass the upgrade exam. However, please note that if a third attempt is required then a retake fee (of $50) will apply. The same fee will also be applicable for each re-take thereafter. Once the exam has been passed then all of the active SAFe 4 certifications that you hold will automatically update to SAFe 5.0.

*Please note that your SAFe 5.0 certification expiration date will remain the same as your previous SAFe 4 expiration date. All certifications must be renewed annually to remain active.

What will happen if I don’t upgrade?

Upgrading your certification to SAFe 5.0 is optional. Should you choose not to upgrade, then any active certifications that you hold will remain valid until the date of expiration.

You will still be able to renew your SAFe 4 certification, and the normal renewal process and fees will apply.

It is, however highly recommended that individuals take advantage of the free upgrade path – which will ensure that you stay up to date with the latest SAFe Framework and tools.

In addition to the above information and guidance, the Scaled Agile Framework have produced a full list of SAFe 5.0 FAQs which can be viewed here.
