When is ‘Done’, truly 100% ‘Done’?

When working through any Product Backlog, it’s essential that the whole Scrum Team have a clearly defined and mutually agreed understanding of when each backlog item can be deemed as complete. Without this collective and transparent agreement, teams may struggle to get product backlog items 100% truly ‘Done’ within a Sprint. This is explained further by the Scrum Guide; “When a Product Backlog item or an Increment is described as “Done”, everyone must understand what “Done” means. Although this varies significantly per Scrum Team, members must have a shared understanding of what it means for work to be complete, to ensure transparency. This is the definition of “Done” for the Scrum Team and is used to assess when work is complete on the product Increment.” The Scrum Guide (p.16) The below example of ‘Done’ is fairly typical for a team early on in its adoption of Scrum within a corporate environment. Donna has been working in the Agile field for 7 years and is a Certified ScrumMaster and Certified Scrum Product Owner. Prior to this, she spent 18 years working at management consultancy Accenture, where she pursued a career in Knowledge Management and later on Capability Development and Training Strategy. She was a member of the Global Consumer Goods and Services practice leadership team and managed the global training and knowledge management programme for 8 years. Eventually, the lure of the countryside and a better work-life balance, led her to join her husband in his previous Agile company, where she was responsible for a strengthened marketing capability including marketing planning and strategy, conference management, communications strategy, SEO and website management, and social media.
Donna is a collaborative and dynamic manager, with a confident and outgoing personality and strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
Outside of work, Donna is mum to two teenage daughters (running the usual evening school-club taxi service), enjoys the ‘Good Life’ (and knows how to make cider, bacon and sausages and real bread), and is a keen open-water swimmer and triathlete.
