  • Component Teams vs Feature Teams

    There’s nearly always too much work. Certainly there is often too much work for one team. Considering the optimum team size (in Scrum) is between 5 and 9 people, it doesn’t take much of a backlog to require us to have multiple teams. When this is the case, it introduces the problem of how to divide the work up between the teams. The two most common ways I’ve seen teams organised are as Component Teams and Feature Teams – but which is the best way of organising your company? This is an area that is often debated. They are contrasting approaches to software delivery and I’ve heard many arguments in favour of each. Let’s have look at them. Component Teams Component Teams are considered to be made up of experts that specialise in a specific domain and they are focused only on the knowledge and technology related to their domain. It ’stands to reason’ that if there is an area of complexity needing work performed on it on a regular basis, we should have a team dedicated to it. Donna Hicks

Donna Hicks, co-founder and owner of agil8, leads the very capable back office team and has overall responsibility for Sales and Marketing and Customer Service.   If you are unsure which course to take, how to progress your career, or want to talk about in-house agile training and consulting, then Donna will most likely be the one to answer your questions.

Donna is also responsible for managing agil8’s Marketing function and so you can expect to find her at Agile events, managing agil8 communications, and supporting the wider agil8 community.

Donna has been working in the Agile field for 7 years and is a Certified ScrumMaster and Certified Scrum Product Owner.  Prior to this, she spent 18 years working at management consultancy Accenture, where she pursued a career in Knowledge Management and later on Capability Development and Training Strategy.  She was a member of the Global Consumer Goods and Services practice leadership team and managed the global training and knowledge management programme for 8 years.  Eventually, the lure of the countryside and a better work-life balance, led her to join her husband in his previous Agile company, where she was responsible for a strengthened marketing capability including marketing planning and strategy, conference management, communications strategy, SEO and website management, and social media.

Donna is a collaborative and dynamic manager, with a confident and outgoing personality and strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

Outside of work, Donna is mum to two teenage daughters (running the usual evening school-club taxi service), enjoys the ‘Good Life’ (and knows how to make cider, bacon and sausages and real bread), and is a keen open-water swimmer and triathlete.
